November 2023 Meeting

Our Monthly Meetings are held on the last Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. at the Sechelt Seniors Activity Centre 5604 Trail Avenue in Sechelt.

(Note: We do not meet in the months of June, July, August or December.)

Remember to bring your own mug and Club name tag.  Visitors always are welcome! ($10 drop in fee).

Jackie Morra on ‘Layering with Foliage for Year Round Colour’

Garden and home decor lifestyle expert combined with horticulture therapy and an extensive marketing background, Jackie Morra is a sought after speaker at various home and garden shows across Canada and horticulture trade shows such as Landscape Ontario Congress in 2025. Jackie is a popular speaker at garden clubs all across British Columbia where she now lives with her family and is a registered speaker with the BC Council of Garden Clubs since 2021 and since 2018 with The Garden Clubs of Ontario. Jackie has been sharing her over 20 years of experience with gardening and home decor and loves to share tips, tricks and inspiration to all in her high energy presentations. Jackie also teaches horticulture therapy programs and plans and implements monthly programs with various retirement living residences in BC. Jackie believes in giving back and using her gifts to be of service to others and spends time helping various charities and churches with special events and marketing planning.

Bob and Verna Duncan on “Growing Citrus in South Coastal British Columbia”

This presentation will provide information on training
systems, pruning techniques, variety selection and suitable sites to successfully grow citrus trees on the south coast of British Columbia.
Tree fruits included will be lemons, limes, navel oranges, mandarin oranges, grapefruit, kumquats and hardy citrus (yuzu, sudachi).

Maria Valana on ‘From Seed to Harvest: Learning to Grow Vegetables’

Kwantlen Polytechnic University horticulture instructor Maria Valana brings both expertise and enthusiasm to her teaching. She holds a Bachelor of Applied Science from Olds College and a Provincial Instructor Diploma from Vancouver Community College. Passionate about sharing her knowledge, Maria inspires aspiring gardeners through practical, hands-on instruction across a wide range of horticulture topics, equipping them with the skills and confidence to grow successfully.

Vegetable production is one of Maria’s core areas of expertise and a subject she is especially passionate about. In this dynamic one-hour presentation, she will walk participants through the essentials of planning a thriving food garden, starting plants from seed, and successfully growing a wide variety of vegetables from season to season.

Daniel Mosquin on ‘Native Plants for Lower Mainland Gardens’

Daniel is a photographer and botanical communicator. Why should gardeners consider using native plants? Depending on time available, this talk or set of talks begins by discussing what is meant by a native plant, why native plants should be considered, whether native plant cultivars should be used, and general availability. The presentation then shifts to highlighting native plants for Lower Mainland gardens, with details on wild habitats and usage for gardening situations.
